RESOURCES FOR MANAGERS AND SUPERVISORS
Your Life Resources Program (LRP) is designed to provide no-cost, confidential counseling and work-life support to UCI and UCI Health employees and their household members, but it can provide so much more than just that. As a supervisor or manager, you should look at the program as a tool to help your employees improve productivity, reduce absenteeism, improve morale, and provide support in times of crisis. The Life Resources Program can also support you in your role as a manager or supervisor by providing guidance, consultation, and tools so that you can be an effective manager.

Employees’ personal challenges can negatively affect their work. They may be less productive because they’re distracted by emotional, financial, or daily-life concerns, or spending hours on the phone seeking services or resources or even missing workdays because of stress and burnout. The Life Resources Program can help employees deal with the issues that distract them, leaving them better able to focus on work, increase productivity, and decrease stress levels.
Increase Awareness
Promoting the Life Resources Program during onboarding, informal check-ins, team meetings,
and in break rooms and common areas will help increase awareness and normalize the use of
the Life Resources Program for your employees. Please
use the LRP Summary of Services Flyer
or contact your local HR contact for custom posters and promotional materials.
Informal Referral
Informal referrals are referrals to the Life Resources Program (LRP) suggested by you,
the employee’s supervisor or manager, as a result of the employee sharing personal
issues. As a manager, you should see this as an opportunity to encourage the employee to
utilize LRP services rather than providing advice on how the employee can resolve his or
her personal issue. Please use the LRP Summary of Services Flyer
or contact your local HR contact for questions.
People Leader Trainings/Webinars
Managing people in today’s workforce is not easy. Stress is a common issue and balancing work and
family obligations continue to put pressure on UCI people leaders. The LRP program provides you with
the support and consultation you might need when these personal concerns spill into the workplace and
begin to affect an employee’s behavior and/or performance. LRP offers monthly personal development and

Formal Management Referral
A formal referral to the Life Resources Program (LRP) is appropriate when an employee
demonstrates serious work performance problems, severe behavioral or safety issues. In
addition, a referral can be made for a positive drug/alcohol test, refusal to test or if
an employee self-identifies a substance use issue. Please contact your local HR contact to
discuss the use of a formal referral to LRP.

Management (CISM) is a group meeting organized for employees affected by the

purpose of the meeting is to reduce the probability that employees exposed to the
event may experience long-term emotional and/or psychological consequences.
The CISM also offers support, normalizes commonly experienced reactions, and
provides skills to cope and manage the physical, behavioral or psychological
